As a part of Five Studies on Colonialism by Christopher Winkler, Samoan descent Aloalii Tapu danced a new version of legendary choreographer Steve Paxton’s The Goldberg Variations (based on Bach’s The Goldberg Variations played by Glenn Gould), which is originally an improvisation. In his own version, Tapu uses hip-hop and Haka movements. In the white space of Sophiensaele, the choreographer reminded us how people of colour have been excluded from the dance field, or say, how certain dance styles are aesthetically eliminated as “ethnic”.
