Ishmael Houston-Jones and Miguel Gutierrez with Nick Hallett and Jennifer Monson: Variations on Themes from Lost and Found: Scenes from a Life and other works by John Bernd. 13.01.2018, American Realness, Danspace Project, New York.
Lost and (couldn’t be) found. How many (red) chairs were lost and couldn’t be found because of the violent virus?
The choreography as the experiment of re-imagining and remaking was generated with the drawings, compositions, choreographies, and texts of the choreographer John Bernd (RIP). Smoothie making—consisted of various pills, vitamins, yoghurt and beer—followed by a disco moment; the movement vocabulary of the 1980s dance scene of NY and as well as the triplet stomping—particular to Bernd—recall the theory transtemporality. A microstory was hauled to a now and reverberated in the old walls of St. Mark’s Church.
